Arnold Friberg Passes Away

I have seen this painting many times on my brother’s wall, but didn’t know much about it.  It’s called “The Prayer at Valley Forge” – a beautiful depiction of George Washington praying next to his horse.  As I examine it more closely, I am impressed by the details, even thinking to include the steam as the horse exhales into the winter air.  I had no idea this was the same artist who painted other familiar works of art I have viewed countless times.  You can read the full story about him here including a brief slideshow of his works.

Friberg passed away at the age of 96 on July 1st in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Latter-day Saints might not know his name, but they have seen his work as they flipped through the pages of their copies of The Book of Mormon.  If you visit the church’s conference center in Salt Lake City, you can find his paintings displayed there.  This is a wonderful place to go as a family if you ever get the chance.  The whole center is a work of art from the architecture and paintings to the podium.  I am thrilled to have the opportunity to take my children there later this Summer.

In addition to well known Mormon paintings, Arnold Friberg was given the honor of being made a member of the Royal Society of Arts due to his depictions of royalty.  This is why you will find the initials “RSA” after his signature.  It sounds like Mr. Friberg lived a very long and enriching life.  How wonderful that he has so many things to leave behind for people to remember him by.  I am grateful to know a little more about that familiar painting and the life of Arnold Friberg.  I’m sure his art will continue to bless others for many generations.
