Skirts for Haitian Survivors
Last week a friend invited me to go to a women’s conference in Spokane, Washington called Time Out for Women. It features various speakers and musicians – the main theme being hope this year. I became very emotional as I read about one of the women I will hear from who was born and raised in Sierra Leone. She had many hardships and after a disaster, she received a humanitarian kit from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was such a comfort to her and her first experience with the church. At the end of April, I will get to hear her talk about how much that meant to her and the mission she later serves in the area where her humanitarian kit was made. Despite all of her trials, she is a happy woman.
This morning I was pleased to see an article about a young girl who decided she wanted to learn how to sew skirts for girls in Haiti. She was sure that this article of clothing would be good for the hot climate and that many girls have lost everything they own. So her grandmother taught her how to sew these skirts and she can’t wait to ship them off. How I would love to see the looks on these girls’ faces when they open a package containing a homemade skirt for them. I hope they feel the love and concern strangers feel for them and I wonder how many of them will be drawn to our faith because of one girl who cared to do this for them.
Someday maybe there will be girls from Haiti serving their own missions and talking about this thoughtful Mormon girl who gave up her usual activities to do something for someone else. I was touched as I read the full story here.
